1. Toasty Toes Ultimate® Alpaca Crew Socks: best overall

Toasty Toes Ultimate alpaca crew socks in silver marl

This is the sock most customers start with, and the one they come back for. It's fully terry-lined from cuff to toe, so there's a layer of soft loops trapping warm air around your whole foot, not just under the sole. The heel, toe and arch are reinforced, and the comfort cuff stays up without leaving a mark.

  • Blend: 47% alpaca, 38% acrylic, 9% nylon, 6% elastic
  • Weight: heavy, fully cushioned
  • Choose it for: cold houses, winter errands, shoveling, sitting in the stands
  • Also comes as: a half crew and a 3-pack

2. Second to None Over-the-Knee Alpaca Boot Socks: best for extreme cold

Second to None over-the-knee alpaca boot socks

Cold gets in at the top of your boots, so this sock goes all the way up. It's our heaviest boot sock, with a terry-lined footbed that cushions pressure points and a ribbed leg that stays put under snow pants or bibs. If your feet are fine but your shins freeze, this is the one.

  • Blend: 48% alpaca, 40% acrylic, 10% nylon, 2% spandex
  • Weight: heavyweight, over the knee
  • Choose it for: tall winter boots, ice fishing, deer stands, outdoor work in deep cold
  • Prefer a shorter sock? The Second to None Boot Sock is the same build at over-the-calf height.

3. Base Camp Hiking Alpaca Crew Socks: best for hiking

Base Camp alpaca hiking crew socks in blue and orange

At 50% alpaca, this is one of the highest alpaca blends we make, and it's built to stay comfortable mile after mile. The flat-knit construction and smooth seams cut down on the friction that leads to hot spots, and the reinforced heel and toe hold up over multi-day trips.

  • Blend: 50% alpaca, 41% acrylic, 8% nylon, 1% Lycra
  • Weight: midweight, four-season
  • Choose it for: day hikes, backpacking, trail running in cool weather
  • Need more height and cushion? See the Ultimate Trekker Hiking Boot Sock (5.0 stars) or browse all hiking socks.

4. Camouflage Hunting Alpaca Crew Socks: best for hunting

Camouflage alpaca hunting crew socks in green

Hunting is hard on socks: hours sitting still in the cold, then a fast walk out that makes you sweat. Alpaca handles both, staying warm when you're still and moving moisture away when you're working. The terry-lined footbed cushions long walks, and the arch and ankle support keep the sock from bunching inside your boots.

  • Blend: 45% alpaca, 40% acrylic, 8% nylon, 5% elastic, 2% spandex
  • Weight: midweight with a cushioned footbed
  • Choose it for: stand hunting, upland walks, multi-day trips
  • More options: all hunting socks

5. Light Compression Work Alpaca Crew Socks: best for work boots

Light compression alpaca work crew socks in gray

Made for 10-hour shifts on concrete and in steel toes. Light compression through the leg gives a supported feel, while the terry-lined interior and reinforced heel and toe absorb the pounding. It comes in crew and knee-high heights.

  • Blend: 47% alpaca, 38% acrylic, 15% nylon
  • Weight: midweight, light compression
  • Choose it for: trades, warehouses, nursing shifts, anyone on their feet all day
  • More options: all work socks

6. Premium Baby Alpaca Dress Crew Socks: best dress sock

Premium baby alpaca dress crew socks in denim

Baby alpaca is the finest grade of the fiber, and it feels like it: smooth and silky with no itch. This sock is thin enough for dress shoes, has a seamless toe, and keeps a polished look under trousers from the morning meeting to dinner.

  • Blend: 41% baby alpaca, 34% acrylic, 25% nylon
  • Weight: lightweight
  • Choose it for: the office, weddings, travel days in dress shoes
  • More options: all dress socks

7. Ribbed Casual Crew Alpaca Socks: best everyday sock

Ribbed casual alpaca crew socks in natural gray

If you want one sock to replace the whole drawer, start here. It's medium weight, so it works from fall into spring, and the classic ribbed cuff holds without squeezing. The neutral colors go with everything, and nearly 200 reviewers agree.

  • Blend: 48% alpaca, 40% acrylic, 10% nylon, 2% spandex
  • Weight: midweight
  • Choose it for: jeans, sneakers, working from home, everyday wear
  • Best value: the 5-pack, or build your own mix-and-match pack

8. Everyday Diabetic Wide-Calf Alpaca Crew Socks: best for sensitive feet

Everyday diabetic wide-calf alpaca crew socks in denim

Instead of tight elastic, this sock uses an extra-wide rib and a soft comfort band that eases around larger calves without pinching or leaving marks. Smooth construction keeps seams from rubbing, and the alpaca blend helps keep feet dry.

  • Blend: 47% alpaca, 38% acrylic, 9% nylon, 6% spandex
  • Weight: midweight, non-binding top
  • Choose it for: swelling, wide calves, or anyone who hates sock lines
  • More options: all diabetic socks. Socks aren't a treatment, so check with your healthcare provider about footwear for diabetic or circulatory conditions.

9. Cross Trainer Cushioned Athletic Ankle Alpaca Socks: best for the gym

Cross Trainer cushioned athletic alpaca ankle socks in gray

A dense, cushioned footbed sits where sprints and jumps land hardest, while an arch band and Y-heel keep the sock from sliding. A mesh instep vents heat, and the roll tab protects your Achilles from the back of your shoe.

  • Blend: 41% alpaca, 34% acrylic, 23% nylon, 2% spandex
  • Weight: cushioned ankle
  • Choose it for: lifting, HIIT, pickleball, running errands after the gym
  • More options: all athletic socks

10. Kids Stripe Non-Skid Alpaca Socks: best for kids

Kids striped non-skid alpaca socks showing the grip sole

Rubberized grips on the sole give little feet better traction on hardwood and tile, and the wide cuff stays on without digging in. They're thin enough to fit in sneakers.

  • Blend: 41% alpaca, 34% acrylic, 25% nylon
  • Weight: lightweight with grips
  • Choose it for: toddlers, daycare, slippery floors
  • More options: all kids' alpaca socks

Are alpaca socks wool? What "alpaca wool" means

Yes, in the everyday sense: alpaca is a natural animal fiber shorn from alpacas, just as wool is shorn from sheep, which is why people search for "alpaca wool socks." Alpaca behaves differently from sheep's wool in a few ways that matter for socks:

  • No lanolin. Alpaca fiber contains no lanolin, the wool grease that many people with sensitive skin react to.
  • Partly hollow fibers. Many alpaca fibers have air pockets in the core, which helps them insulate well for their weight.
  • Moisture and odor. Alpaca wicks moisture away from the skin and resists odor, so socks stay fresher across a long day.
  • Softness. Fine alpaca, especially baby alpaca, feels smooth rather than prickly.

Why our socks are a blend, not 100% alpaca

Pure alpaca is soft but not very elastic or abrasion-resistant on its own, so a 100% alpaca sock would sag and wear through at the heel. Most of our socks are 35–60% alpaca, blended with acrylic for loft, nylon for durability, and a little spandex or elastic so they keep their shape. If you want pure alpaca anyway, we make a few 100% alpaca hand-knit styles.

How to choose the right alpaca wool socks

  • Match the weight to your shoe. Lightweight for dress shoes and sneakers, midweight for everyday and hiking, heavyweight and terry-lined for winter boots.
  • Match the height to your boot. Pick a sock that sits above the boot top: crew for hikers, over-the-calf or over-the-knee for tall boots. See all crew, over-the-calf and over-the-knee styles.
  • Get the size right. Our size chart maps shoe sizes to sock sizes for men, women and kids.

Frequently asked questions

Are alpaca socks warmer than wool socks?

Alpaca insulates very well for its weight, so an alpaca sock can feel warmer than a wool sock of the same thickness. How warm a sock feels depends as much on its thickness and cushioning as on the fiber, so for the most warmth, choose a terry-lined style like Toasty Toes or Second to None.

Do alpaca socks itch?

Most people find they don't. Alpaca fibers are smooth, and there's no lanolin. If wool socks have bothered you, start with our guide to alpaca and itch.

How do I wash alpaca socks?

Turn them inside out and machine wash on the wool or hand-wash cycle in cold water, with no chlorine bleach. Air drying is best; a trip through the dryer won't ruin them, but they may shrink slightly. Full instructions are on our care page.

How long do alpaca socks last?

With reinforced heels and toes and the nylon in our blends, a pair worn in rotation lasts for years. We put that to the test in our durability test.

Who makes Warrior Alpaca Socks?

Warrior Alpaca Socks was founded in October 2006 by Inca Brands, Inc., a women-owned family company in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, that has worked with alpaca fiber since 2001.
